Health care advocate Michelle Katz teamed up with the ABC News team and Doug Hirsch, the CEO of the popular mobile app GoodRx to demonstrate how people can cut their prescription bills in half.

According to Hirsch, although the Food and Drug Administration monitors the products, the agency does not regulate price, so consumers have to pay whatever the pharmacy charges — at times a 20 percent to 80 percent price difference for the same drug.

How the app works is patients can type in their needed prescription drug and their location, and the app will look for coupons as well as the best price for the drug in their area. Patients then can download the coupons to their smartphone or print them out from the GoodRx website.  The app also provides the pharmacy’s number and gives directions on how to get there.

The app was able to save one family $2,280 on their annual medication costs.
