A friend of mine was recently telling me a story about how a business rival of his would be good at what he does, but he spends too much time focusing on the wrong things. I asked him to explain and he said, "the guy is smart and a good leader, but he spends too much time on things that don't matter, things that don't make a difference in him becoming more successful at what he does, and that's why he'll never beat me."
It didn't hit me until later, when I sat down to write, that I've done this many times in my life; focusing on things that don't deserve my time and attention. And I can tell you that everyone I know at some point has too. How many times have you spent way too much time doing things that have absolutely no value in moving you forward in life. I know life is about the journey, the experience, but why not progress ourselves into better life situations?
If everyday we would focus our time and energy into doing things that enhanced the quality of our lives and those around us, we would find ourselves much happier. Instead we find things to escape into like facebook, a man or woman, drugs, alcohol, gambling, shopping, you name it...we focus on escaping rather than growing. Why? Because we think its easier. But that's an illusion, its actually harder. You can choose either path, and I'm sure eventually you'll end up where you need to be, but one path is a bit healthier and more pleasant.
The bottom line is that when we spend our time and resources doing things that don't make our situations or our lives better in the overall scheme of things, we're prolonging our happiness. Focus on things that matter. Instead of spending hours watching entertainment on TV, read an inspiring and informative book to expand your knowledge. Instead of spending hours, days and weeks at a time with someone your dating, spend a few hours together every other week or once a month and use the rest of your time to create more personal growth in your life. I'm stressing this because a lot of us complain a lot about our situations, but we don't put forth a true effort to change our situations. Each of you, have within you the ability to change whatever you want to change in your life. The question is, are you willing to focus on the things that will create that change? Think about it. -love, sj
