Thanksgiving weekend launched the holiday season into high gear by providing record-breaking box office numbers. With a handful of strong holdovers and a few interesting new releases, moviegoers turned out in massive numbers over the holiday weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, over the course of the long weekend a record total of $290 million was made in ticket sales -- surpassing the previous record revenue of $270.5 collected in 2009.
The final "Twilight" movie (Breaking Dawn Part 2) came in at number one and brought in $43.1 million over the three-day weekend, while Daniel Craig's James Bond movie, "Skyfall," was second and made $36 million.
Spielberg's "Lincoln," the holiday-themed animated “Rise of the Guardians” and the film adaptation of Yann Martel's 2001 novel “Life of Pi” place in the top 5 box office earners, grossing well over $20 million dollars each.
