Michelle Williams is returning to the theatrical stage. The former Destiny’s Child member has joined  the latest national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical "Fela!"

Producers of the play announced Thursday the singer will be onstage when the tour opens at Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 29.

"Fela!" -- a biography of Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti – is scheduled to play a total of 16 cities, including Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, Nashville, and Atlanta. Williams will play Fela's African-American lover, Sandra Isadore.

Williams has been in several plays and Broadway musicals over the years including “Aida,” “The Color Purple,” “Chicago,” and “What My Husband Doesn’t Know.”

Friend and former bandmate Kelly Rowland shared her excitement of the news on Twitter, saying, “I cannot wait to check out my sister Michelle Williams in the Tony Award award winning Broadway play FELA!  – xoxo KR”

In addition to performing in Fela!, Williams is working to release her third gospel album this year under a new record deal with Light Records.
