Parking in the garage for the main terminals at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport will now cost even more.

The St. Louis Airport Commission approved a rate increase yesterday to make garage parking a flat $5 rate for each two-hour increment — or any fraction of that time — for the first six hours. Currently, parking at the two hourly parking garages costs $2.50 an hour. Daily rates for parking are also increasing from $21 to $23 per day. The new rates go into effect April 1.

Airport officials hope to encourage more people to use the two free cellphone lots when picking up friends and family members who fly into Lambert.

“This is a supply and demand issue,” said Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. “This is not, ‘Let’s be the big, bad airport and charge customers more.’ We have a large demand in the Terminal 2 garage, and so we need to address that.”

The last time Lambert increased parking rates at its garages was in 2009, airport officials said. The rate structure remained the same, but daily rates were increased to $21 from $20.

Increasing the rates at the two hourly garages and select intermediate lots will generate an extra $1.5 million a year. According to officials, the extra revenue will go toward paying for parking expenses first, and then the general airport operations budget.
