Members of the national animal rights organization Mercy For Animals and local animal activists will be in demonstration today to raise awareness of Walmart pork suppliers' practices of cruelly confining pigs in gestation crates. The protest is today from 11 a.m.-12 noon outside the Walmart store in Maplewood Commons.
According to the organization, Walmart is under fire for cruelty to animals following an undercover investigation at one of the retailer's main pork suppliers, which exposed abuse of pigs. Confinement in gestation crates is a practice is banned in nine U.S. states and the European Union.
