The Humane Society of Missouri has increased the reward to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the cruelty inflicted on Zeus, a severely burned male Pit Bull found last month in North St. Louis City.
“We believe there are people who know what happened to Zeus,” said Mike Perkins, director, Animal Cruelty Task Force. “We encourage them to come forward now with whatever information they have. People who abuse animals are likely to harm animals in the future and are more likely to be violent toward other people, so it’s important to bring the perpetrator to justice as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the
Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Hotline
In late August, responding to a call from a dog owner near the intersection of Amelia and Bircher in North St. Louis City, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force dispatched an investigator to the scene, where they found Zeus. The very distraught owner stated Zeus had gone missing. A neighbor called the owner to say the dog was found in a neighbor’s back yard and was severely burned. The owner surrendered the dog to the Humane Society of Missouri. Examination by a Humane Society of Missouri veterinarian determined that Zeus had third degree burns on 75% of his head, from his ears to his nose, with his eyes severely injured. An additional 30% of Zeus’ body suffered third degree burns including his front left paw which had no pads due to the burns, the left side of his body, his left hip and left leg and his scrotum.
Humane Society of Missouri veterinarian Dr. Julie Brinker stated that, prior to this incident, the dog appeared to have been in excellent health with good dental and body condition. The Humane Society of Missouri investigator observed appropriate shelter, clean water and sufficient food and bedding where the dog lived.
Due to the massive extent of Zeus’ injuries, and his agonizing suffering, it was determined the dog was beyond recovery and he was humanely euthanized.
The Humane Society of Missouri notified the St. Louis City Police Department and is now working with them to investigate the incident.
